A Simplified Guide to Selling With Instagram Shoppable Posts and Stories

instagram shoppable posts

Ever since Instagram launched its in-app shopping feature in February 2018, it has opened the door for many businesses to sell their products on the platform. By using this feature, not only are you offering a great experience for your customers you are also getting a chance to attain a return on all the efforts and money that goes into your social media management. With Instagram shoppable posts and stories, you can directly generate sales on the platform.

Head to the ‘Explore’ page on Instagram and you will see a ‘Shop’ tab there. Once you tap on this tab, you will see all the shoppable posts with the tags on all the products. If you too want to sell your products on the platform, you can get started by setting up your Instagram shoppable posts.

Setting Up Your Instagram Shoppable Posts and Stories

To get started, first, you need to be eligible for selling your products on Instagram. In order to get approval from Instagram to sell your posts, you will have to answer a few questions such as – Does your business sell physical goods? Does it comply with the commerce policies set up by Instagram and parent platform, Facebook? etc.

Apart from having a business account on Instagram, it is also important that you receive approval from these platforms, in order to be able to sell your products. It usually takes a few days to a little longer, in some cases.

Once you receive approval, you will have to connect your Instagram business profile to a Facebook catalogue. You can do this by either creating a new catalog with the Catalogue Manager or connect with an existing one. It is recommended to opt for an e-commerce catalog to use product tags and stickers.

To enable the Shopping feature for your posts and stories, log in to your Instagram business profile and head to the settings. Here, select business and then select Shopping. Only approved accounts can see the ‘Shopping’ option. Tap on ‘continue’ and connect a product catalog with your business profile. Tap ‘done’ and you are all set to start adding tags to your posts and stories.

How to Tag Products in Posts and Stories

In order to tag products in your posts, first, you need to add the relevant caption, filters and effects. You can tag products on photos by simply tapping on the products. For videos, a tray will appear in which you can select up to 5 products that you want to tag. Add the product name for every tag. You can select the appropriate product name as it appears in the search box. Tap ‘done’ and then tap ‘share’.

Note that you can add up to 5 tags per image and video posts. In the case of multiple-image posts and video posts, you can add no more than 20 tags.

To add product stickers in stories, you need to select the photo or video you want to add and select the product sticker from the sticker tray. Place the product sticker on the item that you want to sell and add or edit the relevant product name for the catalog.

You can add only 1 price sticker per story. You may add a swipe up link, use it with videos and place it in your highlights.

Tips for Optimizing Instagram Shoppable Stories And Posts

Use Instagram Carousels To Cover Multiple Products

Target your audience with multiple products in the same Instagram posts. Add themes to your Instagram shoppable carousels, or add multiple products from a particular collection. By adding a theme element, you can make your content attractive.

Here’s an example from which you can take inspiration-

Showcase Your Products In Action

One way to push for sales through Instagram shoppable posts and stories is by showing them in action. Whether you want to sell clothes, home decor, shoes or bags, a good way to market them is by showcasing their use.

By placing your product (s) in relevant settings, you get your audience to see how they can use the products and convince them with your visual content marketing.

You can take inspiration from Madewell on how to showcase your products in action for your Instagram shoppable stories. By getting models to show off their products in different looks, they compel the audience to make the purchase.

Finetune Your Visuals

An important tip to remember when showcasing your products with Instagram Shoppable posts is to ensure your visual content is of high quality. Videos and stories with average quality visuals are not going to help you boost your sales.

If you don’t want your followers to scroll past your content because of medium quality images and videos, you need to employ good photo and video editing tools. Shoot content in good lighting for best results. Use nice backdrops and settings to make your products stand out and attract your audience.

Don’t Forget To Check Your Tags

If your visuals are all on-point but you add the wrong label for products, all your efforts will end up going in vain. Add the correct tags to your products to ensure a smooth experience for your customers.

Bring Influencers On Board

You can get Influencers to don your clothes or have them to style your products. Influencers are known to have a good level of impact on their audience’s lifestyle and purchase decisions.
